Jose Pavon-Fermin, 40, was removed from the country in June 2021 after serving time for sexual assault and unlawful restraint, the US Attorney for Connecticut said.
Pavon-Fermin was accused of harassing a woman on a Norwalk bus in 2016, before taking her to a nearby apartment, where he attacked her, prosecutors said, per the Stamford Advocate.
He was ordered to register as a sex offender for life but never did.
Authorities say he reentered the country and was arrested in Norwalk on Jan. 31, 2023, for breach of peace, criminal trespass, and interfering with an officer. He was released on bond but failed to show up in court, leading to a warrant for his rearrest in April 2023.
Federal prosecutors charged him in Oct. 2023 with illegal reentry and failure to register as a sex offender. He was finally caught in Rustburg, Virginia, on March 7, 2024, and has been in custody since.
Pavon-Fermin pleaded guilty to illegal reentry in November 2024 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford.
